Christiane Buggs launches campaign for School Board District 5
NASHVILLE (Tenn.)—February 29, 2016. Christiane (pronounced krɪs.ti.ən) Buggs proudly announces her candidacy to represent the students, parents, and families of the 5th District on the school board in Nashville. The 5th District includes East Nashville, Downtown, The Gulch, parts of South Nashville, and parts of West Nashville. Buggs dedicated her life to educating urban students, and is the current Assistant Director of TRIO Programs at Tennessee State University and a former Metro Nashville Public School (MNPS) teacher. A Nashville-native and 2003 graduate of Martin Luther King, Jr. Magnet High School, Buggs went on to earn both a Bachelor of Science in Physics & Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Tennessee State University and second Master of Education in Teaching and Learning in Urban Schools from Vanderbilt University.
“I have the experience in the classroom over the past 7 years, and this is the reason I want to serve,” said Buggs. “An understanding of day-to-day happenings of Nashville students, teachers, and faculty will prove beneficial in improving outcomes for all students, and is lacking in our policy-making,” added Buggs.
After earning teacher certification in secondary math, Buggs began her teaching career as a 6th grade math and science teacher in 2009. Three years later life came full circle when Christiane returned to MNPS as a teacher. A magnet school graduate who also has teaching experience in both optional and public schools, Buggs is familiar with many of the options our families have to choose from.
In her current role at Tennessee State University Buggs is in MNPS Title I middle and high schools each week tutoring students and working with teachers to reach both academic and career goals.
The official campaign kickoff event will be Thursday, March 10, 2016, at Pavilion East, 1006 Fatherland Street, Nashville, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
